Cutting the Cable Cord

I created an experiment yesterday.  It is pretty simple.  I will see if I can go 7 days without watching cable TV.

Currently, I have a subscription to cable (Midco) and a TiVo in 3 rooms.  I live alone and barely watch TV as it is.  I have an Apple TV that I watch movies, shows, and apps, which is connected to my main living room television.  Most of my entertainment consumption comes from YouTube, Netflix, and HBO Now.  I have YouTube Red, which is $12.99/month, Netflix is $9.99/month, Hulu for $7.99/month, and HBO Now for $14.99/month.  That adds up to $45.96 per month or over $500 per year.  I’m a college student and my income is limited.  Paying $45/month is not much for entertainment.  Meanwhile, my cable (and wifi) cost around $200/month.

I’m not great at math, but 200 is more than 45.

So if I can go a full 7 days without watching my cable on the old tube, I’ll cut the cable.  This will also help me avoid distraction when reading and writing during this Summer of Books.
